After a long drive, I’m finally Home? Yeah, there it is! Burning Man! No it’s not a mirage in the desert, it’s actually there. A city… in the middle of nowhere… with 40,000 people… Built by love, passion, creativity and a little bit of insanity…
Until just this moment, this place, this space was just an unimaginable thing. Yeah I knew how big it was, I have seen the pictures but this… nowhere in my mind was I able to picture THIS! OMG!!!
The day before I started this journey I was swimming in my tiny apartment pool with my roommate. Noticing the buildings surrounding us, I tried to picture in my mind what it would be like standing on the playa… It was nothing like THIS!!!
(Of course, now that I am home, I can’t imagine anywhere else…)
This is my first official day at Burning man!!!
Monday, we arrive in Gerlach just before noon after an 11 hour drive. (Who knew a full size truck pulling a loaded trailer carrying 90 gal. of water and camping gear for 8 could go so fast.) Waiting in line at the gas station in Gerlach, getting ready to gas up incase the line to get in, then out at the end of the week, is slow, looking around you can get a hint… a small taste of what is to come. People are already walking around in costume outside in the town. Bikes are being sold on the side of the road. Good vibes are everywhere!
The line to get in was quick! 30 min tops! My tickets are at will call so the group had to stop so I could get them. OK, so it’s HOT… it’s DUSTY… it’s really not that bad! It’s a beautiful day out, clear sky, nice breeze… then the first amazing thing happens.
I walk by a man who is asking if anybody has an extra ticket to sell. I of course do not so I go get in line. Again, it’s quick! 10 min. …and there it is… in my hand… an extra ticket? There must be some mistake, why is my Karma being tested now? I sold everything I owned to get here. I pawned all of my jewelry. I could take this ticket and sell it to that guy; it would be an easy $100. What if the guy in the volunteer booth is responsible for a certain amount of tickets and will have to come up with the cash for the missing ticket? I have to make a decision fast; my group is waiting for me! What if this is MY good Karma thanking me with the opportunity to recoup a bit of extra money?
Always do the right thing! I turned right back around and returned the ticket! It’s not like I had just found it on the ground. That would have been different. I knew where this one came from; I know it is not mine!
The guy was surprised and thankful. In hind site, I wonder if it would have been better if I had just given it to the guy who was looking for a ticket. All well… I am pretty sure I did the right thing!
